Here’s one kind of fear that you want your people to feel: the fear that your organization will fail.

The right and wrong ways to encourage that kind of fear:

Wrong way: Panic at every business threat, and expect everyone else to panic, too. Remember: Chicken Little was not a great leader.

Right way: Acknowledge marketplace threats, and show everyone how to analyze them rationally.

Fear of losing can serve as a great antidote to complacency, provided it’s understood and monitored by the person at the top.
