- He takes strong stands and sticks to them. People who say they trust politicians the least support him the most. When he marches in a July 4th parade, onlookers shout “Give ’em hell, Bernie!”
- He respects people. Every year, in tiny Vermont towns, Sanders holds single-issue public meetings and brings in experts on pocketbook issues such as health care. Voters associate him with serious discussions that don’t insult their intelligence.
- He finds allies. Because he’s genuine, opponents know they can count on him to help them accomplish something whenever they do agree, even if it’s only 2 percent of the time.
