When recent graduates enter any job, many of them will view it as an extension of school. Result: They have beliefs and expectations about working life that you, as their leader, need to retool.

Some examples:
  • Class clowns are not welcome. Sure, a cheerful personality is an asset, but it’s now time to be judged on results.

  • Deadlines are to be beaten, not met. People who pull all-nighters to finish assignments need to be reeducated.

  • Class stars don’t reap an undue share of rewards. People must learn to cooperate, not dominate. For many star students, that’s a hard lesson to learn.

  • The days of multiple-choice tests are gone. It’s now time to think up new answers to problems, not to check a box of solutions that other people offer.
