Incredibly enough, the IRS is holding refund checks for more than 100,000 tax payers who cannot be located. (IRS News Release IR-2007-189)
The checks, which were returned as being undeliverable, total about $110 million. All too often, this is simply a matter of failing to notify the IRS about a change in address.
If you know of someone who might be due a refund, direct that person to the “Where’s My Refund” tool at www.irs.gov. To access personal information, you must submit your Social Security number, your filing status and amount of the refund shown on your 2006 return. Alternatively, you can call the IRS at (800) 829-1954.
