North Carolina teachers reporting to school this fall found their state-awarded bonuses cut by 30%.

Hundreds appealed to state Sen. Steve Goss, a former teacher, for help. “The state will be making a powerful statement if, even in challenging economic times, we pay the bonuses as was promised,” Goss told the Associated Press.

The state has granted teacher bonuses for the past 11 years, with the amount based on schools’ performance on standardized tests.
