To stage a successful brainstorming session, don’t play it safe. Avoid gathering everyone in a sterile conference room at the end of a harrowing week and expecting them to produce brilliant insights. Instead, experiment with new approaches to energize the group.
For example, inject fun into the proceedings by holding up a mousepad or a coat hanger and asking, “What are some different ways to use this object?” Also decorate the walls of the meeting room with the participants’ “artwork.” Begin by giving them watercolors or crayons and having them spend 10 minutes on their designs. Posting such visuals on the walls will not only break down barriers within the group, but the colorful surroundings may stimulate creativity.
