Know the risks before you leave home. Example: the U.S. State Department warns that hailing a cab in Mexico City is dangerous unless the taxi is summoned by phone or contracted in advance at the airport. To research your destination, check out the State Department’s country-specific travel warnings and security reports (travel.state.gov/travel_warnings.html). Automated recordings are available at (202) 647-5225.

Always copy all your vital documents, such as the most important pages of your passport and your credit cards with the issuers’ customer-service phone numbers. Leave one copy in your hotel room and another at home.
