You want to motivate your employees to adopt an ambitious action plan, but you’re greeted with apathy or resistance. Don’t give up. Schedule an informal discussion in which you ask the group three questions: What are you working on? What else could you be working on? Now what? The first question invites them to summarize the status quo. The next question encourages them to tell you about back-burner items and major projects that they may have pushed off. It’s at that point that you can remind them of your action plan and get them to assess where it fits in. Asking Now what? directs everyone’s focus to the future. You can show them why your plan merits their attention so that they feel excited—not scolded—into embracing your proposal.
