Never download software programs from unfamiliar Web sites. You may be lured into trying to download free software that will supposedly let you watch videos, sample a training program, hear music or let you scan pages faster. But these files can carry computer viruses that secretly reconnect you to the Internet using international phone numbers, leaving you with a nasty surprise when your phone bill arrives. Or you may wind up downloading a program that contains other types of destructive, hard-to-kill viruses. If you discover such a scam, call the Internet Fraud Watch at (800) 876-7060 or see www.fraud.org. Source: Nation’s Business, April 1999.
