What to Say When … (Round 8)

You suspect an overconfident employee won’t get the job done:

“You sound confident that you’ll deliver as promised. Keep me posted on your follow-through. Please let me know when you’ve completed each of these three stages before their deadlines.”

Your boss asks you about a project and you must confess you let it slide:

“I know you asked me to follow up on this, and I said I would do it. But despite trying to manage my time, I didn’t get it done. I’d rather be straight with you than give excuses. I would appreciate any help you can offer.”

Your company president introduces you as the spouse of someone else who works there:

“It’s nice to meet you. Besides being Bill’s wife, I’m [your full name]. I’m [give your job title and briefly describe your job]. While I’m proud to be Bill’s wife, I figure you might be curious about what I do here.”
