Today’s two most popular computer utilities programs—Norton System Works and McAfee Nuts & Bolts—promise the same protection. Both claim to scan your hard drive for viruses, tune up your PC by optimizing available space, save you from lost data and update your virus protection online by letting you dial into the manufacturer’s Web page for software reports. While we found that loading Nuts & Bolts is easier than starting up System Works, SW offers more frequent warning messages—although many were false alarms.
