If you come right out and insist that your boss or employees trust you, you won’t get results. Most people find this blatant appeal unconvincing; in fact, they may pull away if they think you’re not leveling with them. Instead, establish trust in increments: Show that you can keep a secret. Follow through on a promise. Avoid hyperbole. Rather than say, “Trust me, our clients love us,” say, “According to our November survey, 93 percent of our clients gave us their highest rating.”
