On her last day, a colleague warns you that she has heard that some of your employees dislike you:

“I appreciate your telling me this. I’m trying my best to manage fairly and not have everyone hate me. The problem is, it’s hard for me to read some of my people. Do you have any suggestions on how I can improve my relationship with them?”

Your team leader complains to you about conflicts within the group:

“I can’t give you easy answers. Don’t take sides, but find out exactly what’s going on so that you understand everyone’s position. Then try to offer wise, practical solutions that you can enforce.”

Your boss insists that you withhold information from employees that you think they should know:

“You make some good points and I do want to handle this delicately. But my people see me as a straight shooter. To start keeping secrets from them now would risk all the trust I’ve built up.”

A colleague who was passed over for a promotion badmouths your boss:

“I can understand why you’re upset, but what you’re saying might come back to bite you. Move on. You’ll have other opportunities.”
