Here’s one idea for keeping your mind as sharp as a stiletto heel, without spending a dime: PaperBackSwap.com.

It’s an online group of more than 1,000 readers who offer up books they’ve already read (and not just paperbacks), so that others can have them free. Sort of like a high-tech book swap or an online library with no due dates.

Here’s how it works:

Sign up and list 10 page-turners you’re willing to share. You get two credits ASAP, as a club-warming gift. With your two credits, you can request two free books right away. If someone likes one of your books, you’ll receive an e-mail request for it. Mail the book, paying for the shipping cost (about $2), and—voilà!—you’ll receive another credit.

So pull out all those novels you picked up at airport gift shops, and start feeding your mind at no cost.
