One path to success demands that you strip away the things you aren’t — or refuse to be — to arrive at who you really are.

In the words of renowned photographer Richard Avedon, who works primarily in black and white:

“I’ve worked out a series of ‘No’s.’ ‘No’ to exquisite light, ‘No’ to apparent compositions, ‘No’ to the seduction of poses or narrative.

“And all these ‘No’s’ force me to the ‘Yes’: I have a white background. I have the person I’m interested in and the thing that happens between us.”

Lesson: Once you’ve carved out your identity and what you intend to accomplish, let those things help define roles for you and your people.
