One mark of a leader: the ability to show appreciation. A good example: actor Rip Torn.

The venerable Torn has had roles in a spate of movies, and he’s as upbeat about his career as ever. One thing he’s sure of is the importance of showing appreciation.

At a party in Aspen, CO, Torn ran into Jeffrey Tambor, a fellow actor from HBO’s The Larry Sanders Show. The two embraced, and Tambor congratulated Torn on his recent work. When Tambor performed on Broadway, Torn sent him an old-fashioned telegram that said simply, “Bravo.”

At the end of a tribute to The Larry Sanders Show, Torn stumbled over his words of appreciation for co-star Garry Shandling. “Garry made everybody on the show feel like an ace. And that’s why we all love him … for being the decent, wonderful gentleman we all know him to be.”

Lesson: Rip Torn knows how to show the love. Do you?
