People think you either need to treat everyone the same or that you must treat others as you would have them treat you, following the Golden Rule.

But they might not like to be treated the same way. Different people have different goals and desires. Instead, respect and reward your employees as they prefer.

Hence the need for a New Golden Rule: “Do unto others as they would have you do unto them.”

Don’t know what your people want? Just ask. This is a great framework for goal-setting during annual reviews.
