The IRS recently posted edits 2007 Data Book (Pub. 55B) at www.irs.gov. This annual publication presents statistics on the activities for the 2007 fiscal year (Oct. 1, 2006, through Sept. 30, 2007). Key facts: The IRS received more than 1.8 billion information returns in fiscal year 2007. Of these returns, 1.17 billion were filed electronically. Also, the number of IRS examinations of individual income tax returns increased by 1% from the prior year to almost 1.4 million. Of those, 331,339 (about 24%) were conducted by revenue agents, tax compliance officers and other examiners. The balance—more than 1 million of the returns—were correspondence audits.
