The Indiana Department of Labor (DOL) reported that fatal workplace injuries in the state hit a record low in 2007. DOL reported 127 fatal occupational injuries last year, 21 fewer than reported in 2006 and the lowest since the DOL began keeping its Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries in 1991.
Manufacturing and retail industries, which employ nearly one-third of Indiana workers, both posted record lows in workplace deaths. Manufacturing reported seven fatalities, a significant reduction from an industry high of 40 in 1997. Retail fatalities fell to four in 2007, well below the industry’s average of 13.
