Employees of Copanion in Andover, Mass., rarely go out for lunch. Instead, they enjoy catered meals every day—right at work. Employees eat and talk together in the company’s two lunchrooms.

When the tax document automation company moved to a new building, CEO Steven Ladd hired a chef to make lunches for the 32 full-time employees to make them feel “comfortable and properly fed,” he said. The chef doesn’t repeat a menu for at least five weeks.

The lunches cost the company several thousand dollars a month.

Downside: Employees gained weight once the company started serving free lunch. Now the chef makes salads and light wraps, and takes requests for special meals to meet employees’ dietary and religious needs.

Copanion also started encouraging employees to join a gym, where they receive a discount through their medical insurance. Other employees jog around the grounds—there’s an on-site shower so they can freshen up afterward.

Since Copanion opened in March 2006, it has never had to replace an employee.
