Is gas costing your employees more than they’re willing to pay to get to work? If so, consider shortening your workweek.

In August, Utah extended its government service hours from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., and started closing about a third of the state government offices on Fridays. The move not only saves commuting costs for employees, but also is expected to cut the state’s energy costs by 20%. Utah officials say the move has been especially appealing to younger workers.

Other states, including Minnesota, are mulling the same move.

It’s no wonder: Almost 90% of commuters in a new CareerBuilder survey report they have sacrificed personal spending so they can pay for the gas they need to drive to work. Example: 21% admit they skipped their vacations this year because of gas prices.
