Q. One of our employees has been called for jury duty. What are our obligations?

A. North Carolina law prohibits discharging or demoting an employee for serving as a juror. This statute provides for a civil action against an employer for such conduct and provides the remedies of reasonable damages and reinstatement.

North Carolina law does not require an employer to pay an employee while the employee is absent from work to serve on a jury. However, many employers do pay their employees during their jury service to encourage participation in this important activity.
