Responding to skyrocketing gasoline prices, General Motors has announced it will shift its product mix to 60% cars, up from its current 50%, and close four plants that make trucks.

GM says the shutdowns will save the company about $1 million per year. It will add third shifts at two plants in Michigan and Ohio that make the Chevrolet Malibu and Cobalt.

CEO Rick Wagoner said the company is considering selling its Hummer line and increasing its investment in the Chevy Volt electric model planned for the 2010 model year.
