Consulting firm keeps young workers with ‘Short’ hours, communication

Censeo Consulting grooms young employees for long careers with the five-year-old Washington, D.C., company through frequent feedback and flexibility.

Managers do their best to tailor the jobs so they suit the talents and career goals of each of the company’s 40 employees.

“We look at the whole issue of how people are managed in the industry, both from a career standpoint and a work/life standpoint,” says President Raj Sharma. “We’re working with people to understand what their goals are, what their strengths are.”

To that end, employees can work with managers to modify their responsibilities based on their skills.

Sharma believes employees need informal and formal feedback—and so does the company. So he invites employees to talk with leaders about problems and invites them to confide their concerns in an outside consultant—without repercussions.

At Censeo, the workweek is a relatively modest 50 hours, compared with up to 80 at its competitors, says Sharma.
