Q. The economy is slowing down and we may have to close one of our locations. Does North Carolina have any law beyond the federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act that requires notice of large layoffs or business closings?

A. No. The federal WARN Act applies to all employers with more than 100 employees and requires certain notices in the event of large layoffs or business closings. Many states have adopted a similar law, many of which apply to smaller employers. North Carolina has not adopted a “little” WARN Act. Therefore, you need only comply with the federal law.
