Carrie Williams, an employee at a Wachovia call center in Alabama, has filed a lawsuit alleging the company failed to pay employees for time spent logging onto computers before taking calls.

She is seeking class-action status for employees at the 14 call centers operated by Charlotte-based Wachovia.

Make sure your hourly employees are not required to put in compensable work time—even mere minutes here and there—off the clock. It doesn’t take much disputed work time to add up to a big class-action headache.
