The Michigan State Department of Corrections has announced plans to ban smoking by prisoners and staff early next year.

Smoking is banned inside prison buildings, but inmates and staff are permitted to smoke outside. About 70% of the state’s more than 50,000 prisoners are smokers. The department plans smoking cessation programs for inmates and staff.

Some have called the ban “too rigid,” but Corrections spokesman Russ Marlan said, “We should see healthier inmates long term ... and that should translate into some health care savings” for taxpayers.

It might be an effective crime deterrent, too.
