The state health department has announced plans to overhaul the rules governing “man camps,” temporary housing for oil and gas workers in the western part of the state.

Speaking at the Northwest Colorado Oil and Gas Forum in Rifle, Therese Pilonetti, of Colorado’s Consumer Protection Division, noted the rules governing such housing haven’t been updated since 1968.

Changes could include making the sites less inviting to bears and other wildlife, Pilonetti said, and making the camps more accessible to medical responders.
