Revelations of lavish spending by the Colorado Board of Education, including a $2,333 dinner for 28 that included $135 worth of rhubarb pie, has resulted in a little belt-tightening. State lawmakers slashed the board’s budget from $276,000 last year to $220,000 for the next fiscal year, which begins July 1.

The dinner tab, along with a full accounting of board members’ spending over the prior 18 months, was revealed in February by the Associated Press, which obtained the records through the Colorado Open Records Act.

The dinner was part of a monthly meeting held in Telluride. The board said it has a mandate to meet in outlying areas of the state to understand local officials’ challenges.

Sen. Steve Johnson, R-Fort Collins, called the bills “outrageous.”
