An assistant for Hofstra University’s football team has filed a federal lawsuit charging that she was “subjected to offensive and sexually graphic movies in the presence of howling and taunting male students” and “locked in a bathroom by a group of male students.”

Lauren Summa, a Hofstra speech communications major, says she complained, but was twice retaliated against and then fired. She is seeking a jury trial and unspecified damages.

University spokeswoman Melissa Connolly said, “When these issues were raised, the university responded immediately by conducting a thorough investigation.”

Note: If true, that’s the right response. While employers can’t always prevent bad behavior, you are responsible for your response once a complaint is lodged. Responding swiftly and aggressively to all complaints is your best line of defense against misconduct.
