The IRS has posted a warning about e-mail and phone-based scams that falsely use the agency’s name. The goal: Trick people into giving up their Social Security numbers and other financial data.

One tactic: E-mail scammers pose as the IRS, saying it needs your data to send you the promised stimulus-package tax rebate. In reality, the IRS never sends unsolicited e-mail about personal tax matters.
