Q. We have several employees who have children in school and sometimes want to leave work early to attend recitals, sports events and other school activities. Are employees who are parents entitled to a leave time to attend their children’s school activities?
A. Yes. North Carolina requires employers to grant employees four hours of unpaid leave per year to be involved in their children’s school activities. This benefit is for parents, guardians and persons standing in loco parentis of school-age children. The law also prohibits employers from taking adverse action against an employee for requesting or taking such leave.
