A Baltimore-based firm that helps employers and communities open day care centers is working with its own employees on their family ties.
The 16 employees of Friends of the Family may take off a half-day a month—with pay—to spend time with family for any reason. About 12 workers take advantage of the perk each month to volunteer at their children’s schools or day care centers, visit with out-of-town relatives or even go shopping with their moms.
Employees can define “family member” however they want, says Executive Director Margaret Williams.
The program costs Friends of the Family about $25,000 a year and helps the company “walk our talk,” Williams says.
