A recent survey found that Houston has the most manufacturing jobs of any city in the United States. According to the 2007 Texas Manufacturers Register, an industrial directory published by Manufacturers’ News, Inc., Houston also has 18.5% of the state’s manufacturing employment (or 225,732 jobs), which is up 2.7% from April 2006.
Despite losing 671 manufacturers, Texas gained 13,844 industrial jobs since April 2006. According to Thomas Dubin, president of Manufacturers’ News, the increase is at least partially due to mergers and consolidations.
Dubin explained that workers who have lost their jobs in plant closings are nevertheless able to find jobs because skilled workers are in demand. Manufacturers’ News also reported that Texas has 24,910 manufacturing companies employing 1.2 million workers. The oil industry remains the state’s top industrial employer.
