The Cochran Firm, founded by the late Johnnie Cochran of O.J. Simpson-defense fame, has set its sights on the poultry-processing industry, filing lawsuits for back wages and other workplace violations that could lead to claims numbering in the thousands.
Poultry laborers in Georgia are predominantly immigrants and earn an average annual wage of $16,000. That could increase by $6,000 to $8,000 per year if their hours are correctly recorded, labor advocates claim.
It’s all part of a nationwide trend sparked by law firms trying to capitalize on class-action lawsuits.
