Texas House of Representative member Rafael Anchia (D-Dallas) recently withdrew a measure that would have penalized employers that hired undocumented immigrants.

Under House Bill 351, “a grant of money from the [Texas Enterprise Fund] may be made to a recipient only if the comptroller certifies that the recipient does not employ a person who is not lawfully entitled to be present and employed in the United States.”

Anchia joined other members of the Mexican-American Legislative Caucus, the Texas Association of Business and several civil rights groups to form a coalition that is calling for immigration reform by Congress (rather than at the state level).

“The reality is that we would rather work together than against each other,” Anchia said, “to make sure these bills don’t come to the floor, and make sure this discussion happens in Washington and not in Austin.”
