Public Employees in Michigan Lose Domestic-Partner Benefits

The Michigan Court of Appeals ruled in February that the state’s amendment banning gay marriage prohibits public employers from offering domestic-partner benefits. The decision overturned a lower court ruling.

As a result, at least 375 university and government employees stand to lose their benefits. Some public university officials worry that the decision will inhibit employee recruitment. The ACLU plans to appeal the decision to the Michigan Supreme Court.
