Employees of Canada's Great Little Box Co. have a daily incentive to meet their goals: a trip on the company's dollar.

"After our budget is done, we set a stretch profit goal," says James Palmer, vice president of sales and marketing for the shipping material manufacturer. "If we meet it, the entire company goes on a trip."

The company started the BOX goal—Big Outrageous eXtravaganza—15 years ago, and has since taken two trips to Las Vegas and five to Mexico. In May, about 160 of the 180 employees vacationed in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, for five days. The company paid for air fare, hotel and food.

Palmer says the trips reinforce an already-strong camaraderie within the office and the teamwork required to win them creates a good working atmosphere. The vacation prize keeps employees focused on the company's profit goals and what they can do to improve productivity.
