During this year's fierce hurricane season, several Florida businesses courted legal trouble by requiring employees to report to work in the midst of hurricane warnings. The risk: Employees can file civil lawsuits under the federal Occupational Safety and Health Act for being forced to work in unsafe conditions. Best bet: Don't jeopardize safety to stay open. Follow state and local weather mandates and government advisories. Check your state labor law to develop your policy.
