Q. Can we legally prohibit female workers from breast-feeding at work? —R.B., California

A. Many states, including California, have laws that allow a mother to breast-feed her child in any location, public or private, where the mother and child are authorized to be present. Thus, if you allow mothers and their children to be present at work, you can't prohibit them from breast-feeding there under state law.
