Is your health plan covering employees' adult children, ex-spouses or other relatives? If you don't know the answer, it may be time for a health plan "participant audit" to help weed out ineligible dependents. Since it began such audits in 2000, Ford Motor Co. has removed 50,000 ineligible dependents, saving millions of dollars. Logistics: First give employees a grace period to review their records and make corrections without penalty. Then, ask employees to show documentation on dependents (marriage license, birth certificate, etc.).
