What if you're seriously considering an applicant, but a good chunk of his or her past experience was at an employer that's now defunct? The dot-com bust of the late '90s makes this a growing problem. Advice: Don't automatically reject the applicant, but don't accept the story without sniffing around. Ask the applicant for names and numbers of former co-workers and bosses. Request pay stubs or a copy of a W-2. Ask for job evaluations. Give the candidate a hypothetical problem to solve that requires use of experience gained at that job.
