The 4-to-1 rule

Words are rudders; they set and maintain the direction of life. That’s why the 4-to-1 rule can take you and your staff where you want to go.

The rule: Every negative comment requires four positive comments. To clarify, you can make as many negative comments as you like. The challenge is in matching each negative comment with four positive ones.

The exercise will teach you to turn negatives —“you did that wrong” —into positives —“I’m confident you can do better.”

The real challenge: Apply the 4-to-1 rule to your thoughts as well. You force yourself to focus more on things you want rather than things you don’t want.
