What’s an inexpensive way to celebrate the holidays?

by on
in Human Resources,The HR Specialist Forum

With the holidays coming up, I’ve been tasked with organizing a companywide celebration that—guess what—won’t cost very much. Last year we had a potluck luncheon, but frankly it was pretty lame, and I haven’t heard anyone begging for a repeat. Any other ideas on ways to celebrate the season without breaking the bank?—Nicole, Ohio

I hear you about the lame potlucks. I know this isn’t for every company, but we’re having a holiday bowling tournament for charity. Everyone is supposed to bring something for Toys for Tots. We’ll set up a double-elimination bracket, and the winner will get a pretty spiffy retro bowling shirt with the company logo on it. Everyone else gets a little gift bag, contents yet to be determined. Catering will be via the bowling alley — pizza, wings, soda and beer. Spouses and sig others are welcome. We expect we’ll have about 75 people, and expect to spend maybe $1,000 on the whole gig.
