When it comes to making termination decisions, what you don’t know can definitely hurt you!

Too often, managers and supervisors hold back (or filter) information about employees that could end up making disciplinary decisions look a whole lot like discrimination. Are your managers giving you only half the story when recommending a termination? Watch out! As a new court ruling says, this kind of “willful ignorance” on your part is no defense to discriminatory conduct.

Case in Point: Ronald Madden, a city worker in Chattanooga, Tenn., was sent home by his supervisor after Madden set off a firecracker at work. The next day, the city’s public works administrator made the decision to fire Madden, relying on the recommendation of the supervisor.
