It seems safe to conclude that Georgia employers won't have to worry anytime soon about a state ban on sexual-orientation discrimination in the workplace.
That's one issue on which all three major gubernatorial candidates voiced rare agreement during the campaign. Republican Gov. Sonny Perdue and Democrats Cathy Cox and Mark Taylor indicated that they wouldn't support rewriting the state's nondiscrimination law to include sexual orientation.
The gay community had been pushing to make it illegal for employers to discriminate in hiring, firing, pay and other employment conditions based on a person's sexual orientation. At least 17 states have similar laws, as do many U.S. cities and counties.
Caution: Employers in Atlanta, take note. A city ordinance bars discrimination based on sexual preference. Employees can sue you in municipal court if they believe they suffered discrimination because of their sexual orientation. The court can fine an employer up to $1,000.
