The key to making telework and flextime part of an organization's everyday business practices is making sure managers understand them, says Kathryn Oliver Kadilak, work/life program manager at the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ).
To that end, Kadilak created a work/life Web site just for DOJ managers. It includeswho evaluate employee flextime and telework requests. Plus, it offers video clips that show managers role-playing typical situations involving worker requests.
Most popular, though, is the site's Decision Tool Kit, which walks managers through each decision. Managers answer questions that reveal whether the employee and the job are well suited for telework, for instance. It even offers suggestions for modifying a questionable request so the manager can approve it.
