Using unstructured, "tell me about yourself" questions during job interviews not only opens you to discrimination claims, it often results in poor hires, says Mindy Chapman, national director of training for the Chicago law firm Sonnenschein, Nath & Rosenthal.
The danger: Inconsistent questioning makes it more likely that you'll collect "protected" information (age, marital status, disability status, etc.), which makes it easier for applicants to sue. Using structured, pre-drafted questions usually prevents those problems.
The threat isn't just a legal issue, Chapman said: A recent study found that 70 percent of people hired via unstructured interviews do not meet performance expectations after they start. Reason: The interviewer didn't collect the necessary intelligence about the applicant to make an informed decision.
