Improve safety by knowing why workers ignore it

Each year, more than 4 million people are hurt at work, costing organizations $48 billion annually. Typically, knowledge of risks isn’t the main problem.

A study by VitalSmarts identified five situations in which employees most often ignore safety rules: (1) looming deadlines; (2) a “just this once” attitude; (3) lack of skills; (4) belief that the rule is unnecessary; (5) belief that ignoring the rule makes the person a better “team player.” Also, the study found that 75% of employees say they wouldn’t speak up if they saw co-workers engaging in unsafe behavior.

Advice: Create an environment where safety is a team sport.
