Employees of Parkersburg, W.Va.-based Simonton Windows gave up cheeseburgers and late-night snacks during a six-week wellness challenge that helped more than 300 people lose a combined 1,470 pounds over the summer.
The two-employee winning team lost a combined 49 pounds during the Simonton Summer Challenge, which drew 151 pairs of competitors from the organization’s plants in West Virginia, Illinois, Oklahoma and California. Teammates walked together during lunch hours and learned about weight, body fat and body mass indexes.
The effort was a way to educate employees and to prepare them for a wellness screening later in the year.
Competitors used the “buddy system” to keep each other on track and also met with professional wellness coaches to address lifestyle issues involving nutrition, exercise, weight loss, smoking cessation and other health issues.
Simonton reps say the company will probably hold another challenge next summer.
